Lately, techno and house have become a bit too trancey-pants and progressive-houseish for my liking. I remembered back to the late 90s, early 2000s when there was the minimal, ‘clack’ house and glitchhouse style that I loved so much. Also back then, techhouse meant house that was almost techno, not the stuff Beatport and others call it, but is really just plain old house. So with that, here’s a mix of some of my fav tracks from that amazing era that very few people embraced.

The History of Drum and Bass Series – Part 1: 1992-1995

I decided to create some mixes that, to me, embody the history and amazing sounds that have shaped, for better or worse, what Drum and Bass is today. All of these tracks are old records, promos, dubplates sand acetates I’ve acquired throughout the years and played at parties/clubs. In the case of dubs/acetates, I tried to remember the artist/track title/year as best I could. I’m certainly not DJ Hype or Dara and I’m in no way the lead authority on this sound, but I hope you enjoy these mixes as much as I do.
All the mixes are available in 192kbps and FLAC.

1992 to 1995 were the formative years for this sound and rightly so, we start in the beginning with the more ‘aardcore sound that hadn’t evolved into jungle quite yet. As the mix progresses, we get fully into the jungle sound and even into the futuristic drum and bass that wasn’t quite popular yet. The mix concludes with the infamous 88.3 track which sounds end up, to me, to be one of the defining drum/build styles that would take over the jump-up scene and be Aphrodite’s signature sound in the following years.

The Sound of Seattle

This is an impromptu mix with a lot of new material and, to me, it exemplifies the diversity and amazing DJ/EDM music scene my favorite city has to offer. I realize I didn’t put any music from Seattle artists in here, but this isn’t that kind of mix.
So from sleazy-ass house and nu-disco tracks hammered out at 4 AM at the Electronic Tea Garden, to gritty techno rompers heard at the best loft and renegade events, I hope this mix shows you what Seattle DJs have to offer and what you’re likely to hear in the Emerald City.

There’s none of that club fodder, no dubstep and no hardstyle… but you should have known that before you clicked on this link.
