I think though, that I would have to comment that the argument itself is a little self-serving. It's a non-issue. Your premise seems to be based on the idea that anything about the holiday season must make sense or somehow be justified. And it just doesn't. No matter how or why some of the customs evolved - they have and we crazy Americans will use any excuse to go completely overboard nutzo holiday crazy. Just look at how all the other "holidays" have evolved in the past decade or so. They're all over-observed. As for which greeting to use, If I wish someone a Happy Holiday and they "correct" me or tell me I should have said "Merry Christmas" instead, they will get a very cheery "Fuck You" in reply.
